William "Bill" Oveson, age 82, passed away on April 1, 2026.
Bill was born on January 16, 1944, in Chicago, Illinois, to Reidar and Mary Oveson. He grew up in Chicago, attending Irving Park Elementary School and Schurz High School.
Bill was a proud member of the Elevator Union Local 2 and within the elevator industry for over 60 years. Through hard work and dedication, he built an impressive career with Otis Elevator, rising from Elevator Mechanic to Superintendent. He continued to share his expertise with the City of Chicago as an elevator inspector before founding his own company, Citywide Elevator Inspection Services.
While Bill took great pride in his hard work building elevators throughout Chicago, he was best known as a deeply respected mentor and leader who made a lasting impact on countless men in the elevator industry. He believed strongly in the value of hard work, and when he recognized that same dedication in others, he went out of his way to guide and mentor them into lifelong careers. Known to those who worked alongside him as "Zero," he was considered a true legend in his field.
Above all, Bill's greatest pride was his family. He is survived by his children, Michael Oveson, Kathleen (Oveson) Haring, and Margaret (Oveson) Lawver; his sister and brother in law, Julie (Oveson) and Dennis Sundin; nieces, Bridget Nowicki and Laura Mayer. Grandchildren: Johnny, Billy, Mia and Noah. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Olivia, and parents, Reidar and Mary Oveson. Grandchildren, Danny and Ben Haring.
Bill passed away peacefully. His family feels truly blessed to have shared such precious time with him in his final year—listening to his many elevator stories, tales of laughter and mischief, and caring for the dad and grandpa who meant the world to them. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew and loved him.
A private memorial service and luncheon will be held to celebrate Bill's life with family and close friends.
