Steven C. Sawka (aged 72) of Wheeling, passed away on the morning of Wednesday, July 15, 2026. He was born on July 2, 1954, in Jacksonville, North Carolina.
Steve found joy in life's simple pleasures and in the people he loved. One of his greatest joys was playing Paralympic Boccia Ball alongside his son, creating memories that meant the world to them both. He loved taking long drives to visit his daughters, preparing delicious meals for his family, doting on his beloved lovebird Pipsquek, and spending precious time with his grandson.
Among his most fond activities like swimming, fishing, and cranking the volume of his favorite music, you could often find him in the garage half watching an episode of Star Trekwhile working on some modification of his son’s wheelchair, maybe a car repair, or building some shelving. From optimizing distilled water delivery to the fridge, watching the latest docuseries on the many mysteries of space, or calculating the precise angle of crown molding at 3:00 am, he was always seeking ways to fix a problem or finding a new project to start.
After retiring from a 38-year career as a journeyman mechanic with UPS, Steve's work ethic never slowed. He went on to own and operate two businesses: Eagle Eye Home Inspection and Always Green Handyman Services. Anyone who knew Steve knew there was rarely anything he couldn't repair or build; and if he didn’t have what he needed, he’d find a way, usually by MacGyvering a solution.
Of the many things his family will miss is Steve’s wry sense of humor. With a quick comeback, some dark humor, or a clever observation, he could lighten a tense moment. A talent he’s passed on to his children and one which they employ often.
Steve was the beloved husband of Suzanne Tortorella Sawka for 48 years. Loving dad of Jaime (Gabriel) Benavides, Christopher Sawka, and Elyse (Jeremy) Hinte. Adored papa of Quinten Benavides. Loving brother, uncle, cousin, and friend to many.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests contributions to help with memorial expenses and provide meals as Steve’s spouse transitions into full-time caregiving for their son. Your kindness and support will help lighten the burden of everyday needs, giving the family the opportunity to focus on healing, honoring Steve's memory, and spending meaningful time together.
