Deacon Stephan Anthony Stecker, age 83, of Wheeling, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 27, 2026. He was born on May 31, 1943, in Evergreen Park, Illinois, to John H. and Anita (Bizzotto) Stecker, and grew up in Chicago Ridge.
Steve proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1963 to 1967 before continuing his military service in the Air Force Reserves in the early 1980s. Following his military service, he began a career with the United States Treasury Department, working in Customs. His work took him on adventures around the world, allowing him to experience different places and cultures. He retired from the department in 1993, but retirement would soon lead him to discover a new and deeply meaningful calling.
In 1994, Steve entered the Permanent Diaconate program of the Archdiocese of Chicago. After four years of study and formation alongside a wonderful group of classmates, he was ordained a permanent deacon on April 18, 1998. For Steve, becoming a deacon was more than a ministry; it was his calling. He loved the Lord and dedicated himself wholeheartedly to serving God's people.
Deacon Steve began his ministry at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church in Wheeling, where he served faithfully from 1998 until 2017. He was subsequently assigned to St. Thomas Becket and St. Alphonsus Liguori parishes. He was also prayerfully involved with the Legion of Mary and Militia of the Immaculata and was a loyal and supportive member of the Knights of Columbus.
Throughout his years of ministry, Steve found great joy in visiting the homebound and residents of nursing homes. He understood the importance of taking time for others, listening to their stories, offering comfort, and sharing a little of himself in return. A gifted storyteller, Steve never missed an opportunity to engage someone in conversation or share an experience from his many adventures. He had a wonderful way of making people feel welcome and valued, and his ministry was a true reflection of his faith and his love for others.
Steve married the love of his life, Deborah Campeol, on August 10, 1974, in River Grove, Illinois. Together, they built a beautiful and blessed life in Wheeling, where they resided throughout their marriage. Debbie was the light of Steve's life, and their love and partnership were a constant source of strength and happiness. She lovingly supported him throughout his diaconal ministry, standing beside him as he devoted himself to his faith and the people he served.
Outside of his ministry, Steve and Debbie treasured their time together enjoying the great outdoors on their wooded property in Wisconsin, creating wonderful memories with family and friends. They also shared a love of travel that took them across the United States and abroad to Ireland and Italy. Whether exploring new places, spending time with loved ones, or simply enjoying a conversation, Steve appreciated the blessings found in life's everyday moments.
Those who knew Steve will remember his calm and gentle nature, his ever-present smile, and his quiet strength. He rarely complained, even while facing illness, and continued to meet life with grace and gratitude. He was always ready to extend a hand, offer a word of thanks, or give someone an encouraging handshake and a sincere “good job.” His kindness, warmth, and genuine interest in others left a lasting impression wherever he went. Steve had a special glow about him; a reflection of the faith he carried in his heart and the love he shared so freely.
Above all, Deacon Steve will be remembered for his unwavering faith, his devotion to Debbie, and his dedication to serving others. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, humility, joyful storytelling, and a life lived in service to the Lord. Though his familiar smile will be deeply missed, the countless lives he touched will continue to reflect the goodness he brought into the world.
Devoted husband for 52 years of Deborah Stecker. Fond brother of Jerry Stecker and the late John C. (Marilyn) Stecker. Caring brother-in-law of Laurie Stecker, Gary (Jill) Campeol, Craig (Dawn) Campeol, and Paul (Donna) Cafaro. Loving uncle to four nieces and three nephews and great-uncle of ten great nieces and nephews. Kind godfather of Ken, Jim Schneider, and Julie Thober.
