Obituary

Robert J. Schuster age 86, of Wheeling passed away Wednesday, March 26, 2025, at JourneyCare of Barrington surrounded by his loving family. Bob was born and raised in Chicago, he was the beloved son of John and Margaret (nee Buchauer) Schuster, who gave him the foundation of love and faith that guided him throughout his life. Bob attended St. Bart's Grade School and Foreman High School before continuing his education at Wright College. He later earned his Master's Degree in Education from Loyola University. With a passion for teaching, Bob dedicated 34 ½ years of his life as an elementary teacher at Canty Elementary, where he positively impacted the lives of countless students and colleagues. A man of great humor and warmth, Bob loved sharing jokes, particularly from Saturday Night Live, with his friends. He was known for his kindness, a huge smile, and his gentle spirit. Bob was a devout Catholic and an active member of St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, where he served as an usher and was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus. Bob had a love for sports, especially his beloved Chicago Cubs and Blackhawks. He shared many exciting moments watching games with his nephews. His social side flourished with his bowling league, "The Turners," and his weekly poker nights with lifelong friends, where pizza, beer, and laughter were always plentiful. Family was everything to Bob. He was an ever-present figure in the lives of his children and grandchildren, attending their activities and making sure they knew they were loved. Christmas was especially dear to him, a time when he would relive the joy of his childhood through traditions passed down from his older brother, John, including setting up trains and villages. Bob also cherished the time spent listening to "The Cinnamon Bear," an old-time radio program, which he shared with his children and grandchildren for many years. He was meticulous about his 100-year-old ornaments, given to him by his parents, and his children fondly recall trimming the tree with his precise guidance as he got older. An avid traveler, Bob enjoyed exploring new places around the world, from Mexico and Italy to France and all over Europe, always embracing the beauty of new cultures and experiences. Beloved husband of Thuy nee Nguyen since 1990. Loving father of Beth Schuster, John (Valerie) Heydt, Ann (Tim) Peshek, Jeff (Jessa) Heydt and Kathy (Patrick) Crossin. Dear grandpa of Jessica, Calen, Alicia, Genevieve, Trevor, Grace, John, Bridget, Owen, Claire, and James. Doting great grandpa of Max and Leo. Fond brother of the late John Schuster and Avril Gruetzmacher. Kind Uncle, cousin and friend to many who were blessed to have him in their lives. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, and his legacy of love, laughter, and faith will continue to inspire those he leaves behind. Visitation Monday, March 31st at 9:00 am at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, 181 W. Dundee Road, Wheeling. A Life Celebration Mass will follow at 10:30 am.
