Alfred and Irmgard Tropper immigrated to the United States from Germany in 1951. Their second child Monika (Moni) Waltraud Tropper was born on Dec 7, 1955 in Chicago, Illinois. During her younger years Moni loved to dance and took ballet lessons. After they moved from an apartment to a house Moni and her brother Peter went to Awana clubs at Midwest Bible Church and also went to Phantom Ranch, a camp in Wisconsin owned by the church. Moni graduated from Foreman High School and then went on to get her beauticians license. She then worked at her father's beauty salon in Lincolnwood. She married George Berger and had two children: Jennifer and Karl. Unfortunately the marriage didn't work out but Moni and George continued to have a good relationship that continued until her passing. Moni remarried Gary and helped manage a number of gas stations in the Skokie area. She loved being with people and had a number of parties at her home in Riverwoods. After they sold the gas stations they took an early retirement and bought a house in Wisconsin which they lived in during the summer months. During the winter months they traveled to the southern states in an RV where they met lots of interesting people. Moni was always adventurous, she loved riding on a Harley Davidson and even helped skin a bear once.
In April 2015 Moni was having some emotional episodes and was admitted to the hospital for evaluation. Unfortunately, a few days later, while in the hospital, she had a stroke. They discovered over 90% blockage of her carotid artery which prevented blood from going to her brain. After surgery to unblock the artery, she immediately returned to normal. The stroke affected the use of her right arm and leg, but she recovered well enough to buy a house near her daughter, Jennifer, in Grayslake. She continued being active, visiting with her neighbors and going on short trips. Unfortunately, her health slowly declined, and she had another stroke and some seizures. She continued to fight and recovered well enough to go down to Arizona to live with her son, Karl, during the winter months. In 2022 Moni went on a cruise with her brother Peter, his wife and another couple. In August 2023, because of health reasons, she decided to move to StoryPoint, a retirement community. During her time there she made many friends, but her health continued to decline until she passed peacefully in bed on August 29, 2024. Moni was adventurous and loved having fun and pulling pranks on people. Her friendliness and fun manner always put a smile on people's faces. These past years have been tough, but it also has brought Moni closer to God. She expressed her love for Jesus and near the end she was looking forward to being with Him. We will miss her greatly but are confident that she is in a far better place.
