It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Michael D. Gorlewicz, age 70, on March 15, 2025, with family near his side after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Chicago on April 27, 1954, Michael was raised in Skokie, Illinois, by his mother, Grace, and his grandmother. He attended St. Peter's Grammar School and went on to become a skilled and hardworking carpenter, known for his craftsmanship and dedication to his work.
On "10-4"-74 like the CB tag, Michael met the love of his life, Melanie Hurmuz, through a blind date arranged by friends. Their connection was immediate, and they married on September 27, 1980, in Skokie. Together, they shared 45 years of love, laughter, and companionship. Michael was a devoted father to his children, Matthew (Jenna) Gorlewicz and Kayla Gorlewicz, and a proud grandfather to his three grandchildren: Drew, Jaden, and William. He was also a loving brother to Mark Gorlewicz, dear nephew to Raymond Bresemann, and cherished uncle to Kelly, Jody, and April. He was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Grace Bresemann.
Michael was a man who lived life to the fullest. His kindness, humor, and unwavering honesty made him a beloved figure to those who knew him. He was known for his sense of humor, often cracking jokes and making others laugh with his quick wit. His favorite phrase, "This isn't my first rodeo," reflected his life's wealth of experience and his approach to tackling challenges with determination and confidence. Even when "the first round went to" the challenge at hand, Michael would find a way to overcome any obstacle.
Beyond his work and family, Michael had a deep passion for classic "oldies" music, and he collected numerous jukeboxes, pinball machines, and arcade games throughout his life. Many of them sit in the homes of his dear family, providing countless hours of fun and friendly competition. His prized possession, however, was his 1971 SS 396 Royal Blue Chevy Nova, which he lovingly called "his baby." He was a man who would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it, always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. He loved attending his grandchildren's activities - be it sports, plays, swimming lessons, or school events - you had no doubt that the red HHR would be pulling up and parking a great distance away. One of his family's favorite shared memories is Mike's elaborate holiday light shows, which combined lights, music, inflatables, and vintage decorations that brought so much joy to all, especially to his grandchildren. He was a constant presence and source of fun to all.
Michael will be deeply missed by all who knew him, and his legacy of love, generosity, and hard work will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
