Obituary

Manfred W. Adelberger, age 90, of Hoffman Estates, passed away peacefully on March 1, 2026. Born June 2, 1935, he lived a life defined by dedication to family, hard work, and perseverance. Manfred was the beloved husband of Lydia Adelberger (née Greschner) for 67 wonderful years. Together they built a life centered on love, resilience, and family. He was the loving father of Fred (Missy) Adelberger and Sandy (Matt) Aykroid. He was a cherished grandfather/Opa to Matt (Carrie), Nick (Brit), Casey (Tim), and Madison (Yesid), and a step-grandfather to Cole and Madison Rose (fiancé Eric). He was also the adored great-grandfather of Cayden, McKenna, Hudson, and Landon. Manfred was a loyal friend to many and left a lasting impression on all who knew him. Manfred met the love of his life, Lydia, in Reinheim, Germany, and they were married in 1958.  In 1965, with courage and determination, Manfred and Lydia, along with little Udo (Fred) in tow embarked on a journey across the Atlantic, arriving in New York Harbor with hope and dreams of building a better life in America. The early years were not easy. Manfred did not yet speak or read English, and adapting to a new country came with many challenges—including learning to navigate unfamiliar customs and foods. Through perseverance and hard work, Manfred built a successful career and became a Chicago Journeymen Plumber Local Union 130 UA, a profession he took great pride in throughout his life. While he was proud of his work, he was most proud of his children and family, who meant everything to him. Manfred lived simply and believed in fixing, reusing, and making the most of what he had rather than pursuing material things. In retirement, he and Lydia enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and Europe, visiting many places together which includes traveling along Route 66, Georgia, Alaska, and Hawaii to name a few. While not traveling he enjoyed watching soccer, smoking a cigar and enjoying a good German beer. Even in his later years, as decades of hard work began to take a physical toll, Manfred remained focused on what mattered most—spending time with family and always finding a reason to celebrate life's moments together. He will be deeply missed by all who loved him, and we are profoundly grateful for the many years of happiness we shared together. Though it is difficult to turn the page when someone we love is no longer in the next chapter, his story continues through the lives of his family. His legacy of strength, love, and perseverance will live on in all of us. Services will be held March 17th, 2026 at the Addolorata Villa Chapel 555 McHenry Rd Wheeling, Illinois 60090 Visitation @10:30am Mass @11:00am A reception will follow the funeral services where family and friends are invited to gather and share memories.
