Johann “Hans” Naumann (October 21, 1934 – May 2, 2026) passed away peacefully at the age of 91, leaving behind a life defined by dedication to family, hard work, humility, and a deeply positive spirit.
Hans came to the United States from Germany in 1956, intending to continue on to Brazil with Volkswagen before eventually returning to Europe. While in Chicago, he met Inge, the woman who would become his wife and lifelong partner. Shortly thereafter, he was drafted into the US Army and served two years in Germany. After his service, he returned to Chicago, and on October 28, 1961, Hans and Inge were married, beginning a partnership grounded in love, shared values, and devotion to family. What was meant to be a temporary stay for Hans became a permanent home, as he and Inge built their life together in the United States.
Hans built a successful career in the automotive industry, which ultimately led to his ownership of a car dealership—a reflection of his strong work ethic, entrepreneurial spirit, and steady determination. In 1974, Hans and Inge visited Germany to consider offers he received from both Mercedes-Benz and Porsche. After careful consideration, they chose to remain in the United States and continue the life they had built together.
Together, Hans and Inge were active in their parish, Our Lady of the Wayside Church, as well as Chicago’s German-American community, including the Alpine Ski Club and the Rheinischer Gesangverein. They also treasured their friendships, many of which spanned more than 60 years. Hans generously volunteered his time as a youth soccer coach, headed automotive dealer councils, and served on the Village of Arlington Heights Environmental Commission.
Hans was known for his kindness, humility, unwavering commitment to those he loved, and consistently positive outlook on life. Carrying his accomplishments with quiet grace, he found his greatest joy in family. Passionate about sports—especially soccer—he enjoyed watching Chicago Bears and Notre Dame football games. He especially cherished attending his grandsons’ sporting events, where he proudly cheered them on at soccer, tennis, and hockey games.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Inge; his son, Mark (Angelique) Naumann; his grandchildren, Alexander and Nicholas; and his daughter, Karin (Brad) Holley. He was preceded in death by his parents, Franz and Therese (Beck) Naumann, and his sisters, Maria Moehlmann and Helga Grabner.
He will be remembered for his quiet strength, generosity of spirit, and the steady, uplifting presence he brought to all who knew him. With faith in God’s eternal care, we take comfort in knowing he is at peace. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched and the family he cherished.
Visitation will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 9, 2026, followed immediately by a Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. Both will be held at Addolorata Villa Main Chapel in Wheeling. Interment will follow at St. Michael the Archangel Cemetery in Palatine.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to an organization of your choice.
In liebevoller Erinnerung.
