Obituary

Douglas George Renz passed away suddenly on November 18, 2024, at the age of 76, from an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). His passing was unexpected, but the impact of his life will be felt forever by those who knew and loved him. Born and raised in the Sauganash neighborhood of Chicago, Doug was the youngest of three boys. He excelled as both an athlete and a student, attending Queen of All Saints, Loyola Academy, and Loyola University, where he earned both his BA and MBA. It was there he met the love of his life, Joyce Martin. Together, they built a beautiful life in Edgebrook, raising three children and sharing 53 years of devoted marriage. Doug proudly served in the United States Navy. After returning home, he joined the family business at Ridgewood Cemetery and later became its President. A man of quiet integrity, Doug led with humility, kindness, and a rock-solid work ethic that he passed on to his children by example, never by lecture. Living with Type 1 diabetes for over 50 years, Doug never let it define him. He faced it with grace, acceptance, and a relentless focus on living fully - often with his family, his friends, and ideally at a dinner table with a glass of wine or a well-poured beer in hand, where butter was welcome, and meals took their sweet time. Doug had an unmatched ability to see the good in people. He brought people together effortlessly and made everyone feel seen and valued.  Doug was sure Bigfoot existed, and when he's proven right, we'll all hear his laugh and his famous "I told you so." He was a true Chicago sports fan—tenacious and patient—living long enough to witness every pro team in the city win a championship, including the Cubs (to the eternal frustration of the neighbor Anti-Cub). Doug was a teacher, coach, carpooler, provider, driving instructor, foursome-mate, enthusiastic spectator, and most of all, a role model. Retirement brought him and Joyce to Lake Forest, where they built their forever home and enjoyed beach walks, yard work, travel, TV shows, escape missions to the grocery store, and quiet routines that made the ordinary feel special. Above all, Doug loved his family, and they loved him right back. That love doesn't end here. We miss you deeply, Papa, and look forward to reuniting in the next life. Beloved husband of Joyce Renz (Martin) for 53 years. Loving father of Tim (Helaine), Mark (Michelle), and Chrissy. Cherished grandfather of Luke, Reese, Eliza, Stella, Sam, and Mikey. Brother of Ted Renz the late Greg Renz. Dear son of the late Dr. Theodore Renz and Florence Renz (Rohrer). Loving uncle, cousin, and friend to many. Services Private.
