Obituary

Dennis S. Burns, age 79, of Wheeling, IL, passed away on Wednesday, January 21, 2026. He was born December 15, 1946, in Chicago to Stanley and Dolores nee Tester Burns. On December 20, 1969, he married Catherine Boie in Park Forest, Illinois. Dennis was a beloved husband, father, grandpa, brother, uncle, and dog dad. His life passions included family, animals, music, and science fiction. Dennis' family lived in several communities before settling In Niles, IL. Dennis attended Notre Dame High School for Boys, graduating in 1964. He attended the University of Detroit for a time before joining his father in the elevator business. After starting at Reliance Elevator, he then worked for Westinghouse Elevator—which became Schindler Elevator. His work as a helper—then maintenance mechanic—was aided by his interest in electrical engineering. Dennis attended Illinois Institute of Technology and completed his degree in 1985. He stayed with Schindler, eventually doing some traveling as a trainer. He retired as a technical training specialist in 2013. Dennis was a life member of the Lions Clubs International. In addition to the monthly meetings, he especially enjoyed working for the success of Candy Day for many years. He served as the Illinois District 1-F Governor from 2012-2013. Dogs were a part of the family for all Dennis' life. With his own family and house, there was almost always at least one dog. When his daughters introduced kittens into the mix, they were welcomed as well. Dennis made sure that the backyard renovation worked well for the animals. His closest bond with a dog came with the last one, our rescue beagle, Twidget, who Dennis picked out from a picture. They were best buddies. Dennis leaves behind his wife of 56 years; his daughters, Rebecca Pike and Elizabeth Burns; his son-in-law, JohnPaul Pike; his grandson, Oliver Pike. He was brother of Sandra (Alan) Drizd; brother-in-law of Susan Hilkevitch and Martha (William) Buratto. He was uncle, cousin, and friend to many. And he leaves behind his buddy, Twidget. Memorial Service scheduled for Saturday, March 21, 2026, at 10:30 am at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 1111 Elmhurst, Prospect Heights, IL. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Midwest BREW (beagle rescue, education and welfare) at gotbeagles.org.
