David P. Meyer
May 3, 1942 – August 7, 2026

David P. Meyer, beloved father, grandfather, brother, teacher, businessman, and friend, passed away on August 7, 2026, at the age of 84.

David was born on May 3, 1942, in Chicago, Illinois, to Saul and Rose Meyer. He was the second of three children and grew up in Chicago, graduating from Austin High School. Determined to build his own future, David paid his own way through Drake University, earning his bachelor’s degree, and later earned his master’s degree from Northeastern University.

David began his career as a high school mathematics teacher. Teaching was a natural fit for him. He loved to teach and had an amazing ability to explain things in a way that made sense to people. Whether in a classroom, at his business, or simply talking with someone, David had a gift for making complicated things understandable.

He later became a small business owner and ran the family business for more than 25 years. During that time, David became much more than a businessman to the people he served. His customers knew him, trusted him, and genuinely enjoyed seeing him. Many thought of David as the “mayor of the neighborhood.” He had the gift of gab and could strike up a conversation with just about anyone. Once David started talking, you could usually settle in for a while.

David had a larger-than-life personality and a wonderful collection of passions. He was obsessed with Superman and amassed an enormous collection of Superman memorabilia. Long before that, he was an enthusiastic dancer and even competed in dance contests growing up.

He also had a deep appreciation for some of life’s simple pleasures. He loved sudoku puzzles, fried matzah, chocolate phosphates, and spending time at his local McDonalds drinking coffee with his “drinking buddies”. These were the kinds of things that brought David genuine happiness—and gave him plenty to talk about.

David raised his family in Wilmette and Northbrook, Illinois, and his greatest pride was always his family. He adored his three children and five grandsons. He loved to joke that he had enough grandsons for a basketball lineup.

A lifelong Chicago Cubs fan, David remained devoted to his team through good years and bad. One of his great joys was getting to see the Cubs win the World Series in 2016—a moment made even more special because his father, Saul, never got to see the Cubs accomplish that feat.

David was preceded in death by his parents, Saul and Rose Meyer, and his younger brother, Hal Meyer, who passed away in 2020. He is survived by his older sister, Adrienne (d. Neil) Winer; his son, Randy (Carolyn) Meyer of Westchester, Illinois; his daughter, Erica Meyer of Chicago; and his son, Matt (Katie) Meyer of Northbrook, Illinois. He is also survived by his five beloved grandsons, Brandon, Julian, Finn, Declan, and Travers.

David will be remembered for his intelligence, humor, generosity, enormous personality, and his ability to make a connection with virtually anyone. He was a teacher at heart, a storyteller by nature, and a person who could make an ordinary conversation memorable. Most of all, he will be remembered as a devoted father and grandfather who took enormous pride in his family.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Max and Benny’s (461 Waukegan Rd, Northbrook) on Saturday August 15th at noon.
